Abbott’s Two Goals Lead Port Huron to 4-2 win over Johnstown

By Ed Sheets

Jesse Kessler had a goal and assist, but two first period goals by Dunk Abbott helped Port Huron defeat the Johnstown Tomahawks, 4-2, Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 3,725 at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Abbott opened the scoring at 10:13 of the first and then provided the game-winner with just 50 seconds remaining in the period.

Alex Blankenburg stopped 29 of 31 shots to pick up the win, his third straight against Johnstown (17-13-9). Colin Brennan stopped 11 of 14 shots in the first period to take the loss. He was replaced by Chris Truehl at the start of the second period. Truehl stopped all 17 shots he faced.

Kody Polin extended the 1-0 lead with a goal at 15:23 before Abbot scored his second goal of the period at 19:10 to give Port Huron (19-19-3) a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.

Jaycob McCombs received a pass from Kessler inside the blueline and beat a defenseman to score on the breakaway at 4:52 of the second period. McCombs’ goal was his fifth of the season.

Kessler added a power-play goal just 3:23 into the third period. It was his first goal since December 14th against Jamestown.

After the Tomahawks failed to capitalize on several opportunities, Port Huron’s Nick Horn set the final after his shot from beyond his blue line slid in at 18:50.

This was the lone power play of the game as Johnstown went 1-for-6, while Port Huron (18-19-3) went 0-for-5.

The Tomahawks complete their three-game weekend series with a Sunday afternoon game against the Soo Eagles at 1 P.M.
