Big Third Period Lifts Tomahawks Over Apple Core

INDIANA, Pa – In their first-ever visit to Indiana, Pa., the Johnstown Tomahawks picked up a 5-2 victory of the Eastern Hockey League’s New York Apple Core Saturday night at the S&T Bank Arena.

 

The Tomahawks would being the scoring when Chris Rupp’s shot trickled over the goal line behind Apple Core goalie Doug Connor. The goal was assisted by Indiana native Pat O’Neal.

 

In the second period the Tomahawks increased the lead to 2-0 with a Joe Kile goal assisted by Latrobe, Pa., native Alex Singley.

 

After the Tomahawks got into penalty trouble, New York would solved Tomahawks goalie Britt League. Travis Quigley fired a one-time shot from the right circle past the extended glove of League to bring the score to 2-1.

 

New York would tie the contest seconds into the third period with a goal from Josh Oring.

 

However, the Tomahawks would quickly respond when Riley Doyon snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Connor to give Johnstown a 3-2 lead.

 

Rupp added his second goal of the game minutes later to give the Tomahawks a 4-2 lead.

 

With time ticking away and the Apple Core goalie pulled, O’Neal would put the game out of reach with an empty-net, shorthanded tally. The goal set the final at 5-2.

 

League stopped 18 of 20 Apple Core shots while Connor stopped 27 of 32 Tomahawks volleys.

 

Johnstown closes out its preseason schedule Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Apple Core at the North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, Pa.
