JOHNSTOWN – The Johnstown Tomahawks slipped by the Aston Rebels 2-1 in overtime during an exciting night at the Cambria County War Memorial Friday night.

The Rebels gained the 1-0 lead at 12:16 of the first period when Aaron Maguyon’s shot slid past the pad of Tomahawks goaltender Drew Hotte. Carter Woolley and Dom Garcia assisted on the goal.

A little over 3 minutes later, the Tomahawks squared the game at 1-1 when Nick Bruce’s wrist shot flew past the blocker of Aston goaltender Jack Leavy for Bruce’s 19th of the season.

Both teams ramped up the physicality in the second period as Hayden Rowan and Mitch Hale were both involved in fisticuffs but the period yielded no goals.

It was much of the same in the third period as the Rebels and Tomahawks exchanged chances. The momentum of the game changed when Rebels forward Evgeny Yakovlev was called for a spearing major.

The Tomahawks failed to score on the power play in regulation as the it ended in a 1-1 tie but would carry over the momentum in overtime.

Tomahawks leading scorer Donovan Ott chipped home a goal past Leavy 20 seconds into the extra frame to win the game 2-1 for the Hawks.

Both teams are back at it tomorrow night for the conclusion of Green Out Weekend at the War Memorial.
