Hawks Drop Close Contest To Rebels

ASTON, Pa – The Johnstown Tomahawks played a solid 60-minute hockey game but ultimately dropped a close 1-0 contest to the Aston Rebels Friday night at the IceWorks Skating Complex.

Johnstown and Aston exchanged chances throughout the first period with neither goalie surrendering a goal.

The teams battled hard in the first period but skated into the intermission at a scoreless tie.

It was the same song and dance in the second period as Johnstown generated chances on Rebels goalie Mareks Mitens, but Mitens stood tall and deflected any chance away.

Both teams went into the second intermission tied at 0-0.

Aston broke the scoreless tie with a power play goal from Jensen Zerban at 13:04 of the third period to set the final at 1-0.

Tomahawks goaltender Drew Hotte was solid in a one-goal loss, saving 25 of 26 Rebels chances. Mitens recorded his 11th shutout of the season with an 18-save performance.

The two teams meet again Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in Aston for a the conclusion of the two-game series.

The Tomahawks are back home for a two-game series with the New Jersey Titans February 17-18 at the War Memorial. Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. the Tomahawks host Penguins alumnus Pierre Larouche (courtesy of TUDI Mechanical) to meet fans and drop the ceremonial first puck. Additionally, Friday’s game is Red Out Night presented of HealthCare First Credit Union with fans encouraged to wear red to support heart health.

Saturday night is Youth Hockey Night and a Thundersticks giveaway presented by Claysburg Pizza. The first 1,500 fans will receive Thundersticks to cheer on the Hawks.
