Ice Dogs Nip Tomahawks 2-1

Dec 30, 2017

Johnstown, Pa – The Johnstown Tomahawks dropped a close game to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 2-1 Saturday night at 1st Summit Arena.

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs scored the only goal of the first period when Ty Proffitt put a puck past Johnstown netminder, Kade Phipps. The assists went to Hunter Wendt and Jacob Willets at 2:37. The goal was Proffitt’s first of the season.

In the second period, Kade Phipps made a handful of huge saves to keep Fairbanks from adding to their lead. The second ended with Fairbanks still leading the Tomahawks, 1-0.

In the third, Fairbanks added to their lead when Jack Johnston scored to give the Ice Dogs a 2-0 lead. The lone assist went to Sam Ruffin at 6:08.

Johnstown ended Fairbanks’ shutout when Mitchell Hale scored to pull the Tomahawks within one. The goal came at 7:59 of the period and was assisted by Carson Briere and Carter Dwyer.

Late in the game Johnstown pulled Phipps for the extra attacker but found themselves taking a penalty for slashing that would require the Tomahawks to put Phipps back in net. On the wrong side of the following 5-on-4 man-advantage, the Tomahawks could not tie the game before the final buzzer.

Fairbanks beat Johnstown 2-1.
