By Ed Sheets

Omar Mullan scored two goals, and Alex Okicki stopped 20 of 22 shots as the Tomahawks defeated the Springfield Jr. Blues 3-2 on Saturday night at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The win was Johnstown’s third straight and it’s first at the War Memorial this season.

Springfield opened the scoring in the first period, as Alex Baskakov scored a power-play goal above the right shoulder of Okicki at 6:22. Collin Finkhouse tied the game less than a minute later. Ryan McNeely and Shane Bednard each added assists on the goal.

Omar Mullan made it 2-0 early in the second period, deflecting a shot from Mitch Hall past Sandro Aeschlimann at 3:38. Mullan extended the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 7:09. Springfield cut the deficit to one with Max Kalter scoring at 17:46 of the third period. Springfield had chances late, but Okicki and the Tomahawks defense stood their ground to preserve the win.

Okicki stopped 20 of 22 shots for the win, his third straight. Aeschlimann took the loss, allowing three goals on 20 shots.

The Tomahawks return home Sunday afternoon to take on the Jr. Blues in the weekend finale at 3 p.m. Pucks N’ Paws night will be held during the game, and fans are invited to bring their dogs. A donation of $5 per dog is suggested, with all donations going to the Johnstown Police Department K-9 Unit.
