Out of Hibernation: Tomahawks Host Brown Bears

Jan 5, 2018

Your Tomahawks are back in action this weekend as they will play games three and four of their nine-game homestand when they host the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday, January 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 6 at 7 p.m. at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA @ Cambria County War Memorial. These will be the first half of a four-game series between the two clubs, which will continue next month on February 16 and 17 at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex in Alaska.  Friday’s game will be the first meeting between Johnstown and Kenai River since January 8, 2017, which ended in a 3-1 Tomahawks victory in Johntown.

Joey Baez looks to start a hot streak as he tallied a goal and an assist in the Tomahawks’ last game – a 5-2 loss to Fairbanks on New Year’s Eve.

The Brown Bears hope to end their recent struggles this weekend, as they have lost eight of their last ten games, including their last four contests.  They aim to rebound with the help of Luke Radetic – who has a team-leading 32 points in 32 games this season – and rookie Gil Garcia – who has a team-leading nine powerplay goals.  Kenai River could ride on its special teams with an NAHL fifth-best powerplay unit, posting a 23.3% success rate.

Friday’s 7:30 p.m. matchup is also Health & Wellness Night at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA, where the first 500 fans will take home a souvenir stress puck courtesy of Highmark.  Additionally, former Pittsburgh Penguin and Stanley Cup Champion Tyler Kennedy will be on hand to drop the ceremonial first puck and sign autographs for fans throughout the game.  Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest is Bizarro Night, a night of wackiness and oddities where the first 1,000 fans will receive a Chinese finger trap.
