Tomahawks impress in Selects 6-5 Win Over Team USA

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Donovan Ott added two points and Dalton Hunter and Filips Buncis each chipped in one as the NAHL Selects team defeated Team USA 6-5 in overtime Tuesday night at the USA Hockey Arena

Team USA gained an early 1-0 lead when Phil Kemp lifted a shot behind Selects goaltender Ivan Prosvetov (Minnesota Magicians) at 6:22 of the first period.

The Americans scored again at 10:04 with a Quinn Hughes marker assisted by Josh Maniscalco.

In the second period, Team USA added to their 2-0 advantage when Jonathan Gruden tallied a goal at 1:37. Hughes and Grant Mismash picked up the assists.

From there, the NAHL Selects team controlled the game.

Cade Borchardt (Brookings Blizzard) slipped home a puck behind American goalie Adam Scheel for his second goal of the tournament. Croix Evingson (Shreveport Mudbugs) assisted on the goal.

Six minutes later, the Selects cut the Team USA lead to 3-2 after Simon Loof (Lone Star Brahmas) collected a pass from Maxim Andreev (New Jersey Titans) and fired it past Scheel.

The Tomahawks’ HBO Line got involved in the action with 16 seconds remaining in the second period when Ott scored his second of the tournament to tie the game at 3-3. Hunter picked up the lone helper.

Hunter decided in the third period that he wanted to get involved in the scoring as he tallied a goal at 2:51. Buncis and Ott assisted on the goal.

Janesville Jets forward Jakov Novak increased the lead to 5-3 just two minutes after Hunter’s goal.

Team USA forward Oliver Wahlstrom cut the Selects lead to 5-4 and then Gruden tallied his second of the game at 8:15 to tie the game at 5-5.

The Selects would go onto win the game in overtime after Maxim Andreev (New Jersey Titans) capped a two-on-one break.
