Tomahawks Tame Brown Bears, Sweep Weekend Series

KENAI, Alaska– The Johnstown Tomahawks picked up a weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Kenai River Brown Bears Saturday night at the Soldotna Sports Center. The Tomahawks outscored the Brown Bears 10-2 in the two-game series.

           

            Andrew Romano got Johnstown (8-4-3) on the board first, taking a pass from Drew Doyon in front of the net, before firing a shot over the right shoulder of Brown Bears goaltender Nicolas Nast at 8:21 of the second period.

 

            Kenai River (1-13-0) tied the game late in the second period, as Evan Butcher deflected a shot from Joey Sardina past Tomahawks goaltender Nick DeSimone at 18:25.

 

                Kelly O’Brien regained the lead for the Tomahawks, scoring on a shot from inside the right face-off circle at 2:45 of the third period. Casey Linkenheld and Luke Lynch provided the assists that led to the goal.

 

                The Tomahawks extended their lead, stealing a Kenai River pass, before Casey Linkenheld scored on a two-on-one opportunity at 16:15. Romano provided the cross-ice pass that led to the goal, his fifth point of the weekend.

 

                Lynch set the final score with an empty-net goal at 19:12. Filips Buncis provided the pass from inside the Johnstown defensive zone that led to the goal.

 

                DeSimone earned his second win of the weekend, stopping 35 of 36 shots. Nast suffered the loss, allowing three goals on 37 shots. The Tomahawks went 1-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

 

                The Tomahawks continue their Alaska road trip this Friday and Saturday against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. Face-off for both games is set for 11:30 p.m. EST. Johnstown returns home to begin an 11-game homestand with a three-game series against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Nov. 12-14.
