Weekend Preview: Generals Invade Johnstown

Jan 12, 2018

Your Johnstown Tomahawks are in action for a three-game WinterFest Weekend from Friday, January 12 through Sunday, January 14 when they will host the Northeast Generals at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA @ Cambria County War Memorial.  This will be the Generals’ first visit to Johnstown this season and the first since February 2017 where the Tomahawks swept the three-game set, outscoring Northeast 18-4 over that three-game span.

The Tomahawks are coming fresh off a weekend sweep of the Kenai River Brown Bears, which includes a 3-1 win on Friday, January 5 and a 4-3 victory on Saturday, January 5, where the Hawks scored three unanswered in third period to seal the series win.

Goalie Kade Phipps looks to extend his current two-game win streak as he compiled a 0.935 save percentage in his two wins over Kenai River last week.  David and Ben Schmidling look to stay sharp as the two brothers combined for three points – including a goal each – in Johnstown’s 4-3 thriller last Saturday.  Carson Briere aims to start a streak of his own as he picked up a goal and two assists this past weekend as does Mitchell Hale, who notched a goal and an assist over the past two games.

The Generals hope to snap their losing streak with the aide of scoring leader Mike Egan – who currently has a team leading 36 points in 34 games this season – and Matthew Wiesner and Colin Bilek, who both have 32 points on the year.  Northeast will likely lean on David Fessenden between the pipes after coming off two solid performances this past weekend against the Philadelphia Rebels, as he helped the Generals to three points in the standings with a 3-2-win last Thursday and a 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday.

Friday’s 7:30 p.m. matchup is also Youth Sports Night presented by Hogue’s Fun Factory and PALCS, where the kids will be running the show with special games and entertainment happening in the 1ST SUMMIT ARENA concourse.

Saturday’s 7 p.m. game is also Princess and Heroes Night courtesy of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association, where the first 500 fans will receive a hand-clapper.  This 1st Annual JAHA event is also Chopper’s birthday where he will be joined by his mascot friends as well as your favorite princesses and superheroes.  This game is also Kids Club Game number two.

Sunday’s 5 p.m. contest is also Sundae Funday where the first 500 fans will receive an ice cream sandwich.  Sunday is also highlighted by HAWKEY Bingo, where the first 1,000 fans will receive a Bingo card to watch, play, and WIN! The game will also be followed by a post-game skate and autograph session. *Please note the change in game time for Sunday’s matchup, as puck drop will be at 5 p.m. instead of the original 3 p.m. start.
