Five Unanswered Tops Ice Dogs; Hawks Win 5-1

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Five unanswered goals led the Johnstown Tomahawks to a 5-1 victory over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs Friday night at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

Fairbanks did not take long to score the game’s first marker when Nolan Schaeffer’s shot from the point beat Tomahawks goalie Drew Hotte.

The Tomahawks tied the game at 1-1 three minutes later when Dalton Hunter fired a shot past Fairbanks goalie CJ Boothe. For Hunter, the goal was his seventh of the season and was assisted by Filips Buncis and Donovan Ott.

Buncis put the Tomahawks ahead 2-1 with his goal at 15:54 of the first period. Samuel Solensky and Adam Pilewicz distributed the assists.

The second period proved be all Tomahawks as the team chipped in three goals.

Nick Bruce tallied his second goal of the season 49 seconds into the middle frame. The goal was assisted by Hunter and Andrew Quetell.

The lead was moved to 4-1 with a Joe Kile goal at 2:57 of the second period. Quetell and Ed Hirka registered the helpers on Kile’s second goal of the season.

The Tomahawks fourth goal chased Boothe out of the Ice Dogs net in favor of Jared Dempsey.

The second period scoring wrapped up when Hayden Rowan potted a wrap around goal that was assisted by Solensky.

Hotte picked up the victory, his second on the season. In the win, he stopped 24 of 25 Ice Dogs shots.

Dempsey, in defeat, halted 16 of 18 in relief of Boothe.

The Tomahawks are back at the Big Dipper Ice Arena Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. to wrap up their weekend series with Fairbanks.
