Tomahawks Fall in OT, Take 3 of 4 Points

ODENTON, Md. – The Johnstown Tomahawks concluded their weekend series against the Maryland Black Bears on Saturday.

Six minutes into the second period, Tomahawks rookie forward Jason Tynan socre his first career goal to put the Hawks on the board, but it would be the only time Johnstown would light the lamp. Two minutes later, Maryland’s Jackson Sterrett tied the game.

In 3-on-3 overtime, Maryland’s Kyle Oleksiuk turned on the jets, breaking away from Malik Alishlalov, and went five-hole to beat goaltender David Tomeo. Oleksiuk’s effort secured Maryland’s first ever win against Johnstown. The teams first faced each other on October 12, 2018, and Johnstown went on a 13 game winning streak.

The efforts of David Tomeo kept the game close despite Maryland’s best offensive efforts, stopping 53 of 55 shots. He moves on to 5-1-1 on the season with the Tomahawks.

With the overtime loss, the Tomahawks went home with 3 of 4 possible points against Maryland, further cementing their 2nd place position in the East Division.

Elsewhere in the East Division, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights were defeated by the 1st place New Jersey Titans, and the Jamestown Rebels topped the Maine Nordiques. The Northeast Generals fell to the Kenai River Brown Bears in an inter-division match-up.

Tomahawks Bear Down On Maryland

ODENTON, Md. – The Johnstown Tomahawks traveled to Piney Orchard Arena to take on the Maryland Black Bears on Friday. The last time these two teams met, the Tomahawks swept the series, outscoring Maryland 9-2 over two games.

Maryland got on the board first, halfway through the 1st period. 20 minutes later, Johnstown’s Sean Bauchens would score his first goal of the season. Though Maryland pulled ahead 2-1 with a goal by Cameron Recchi, Johnstown’s offense came together to score two unanswered.

Spencer DenBeste tied the game with just over two minutes remaining in the second period. With a 2-2 tie and 5:02 remaining on the clock, Christian Gorscak put in what became the game wining goal, his 2nd game winner in a row.

The Black Bears had an opportunity to close out the remaining 1:43 of regulation on the power play after Johnstown was called for hooking. The Hawks penalty kill staved off multiple 6-on-4 efforts by the Black Bears, including a near goal opportunity as time expired. Goaltender David Tomeo picked up his 5th win for the Tomahawks this season.

Johnstown’s victory over Maryland and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s loss to New Jersey earlier Friday created space in the NAHL East Division, with 2nd place Johnstown now holding a 3 point lead over WBS. New Jersey remains in 1st place with a 6 point advantage.

Tomahawks Take 4 of 6 Points Against Generals

Friday marked the first of four bobblehead nights with the Johnstown Tomahawks, with Legend Series : Reg Kent. The first 1,000 fans through the gates received a Reg Kent bobblehead with autographed collector’s box. Reg took time to meet with fans, take photographs, and sign additional autographs.

On the ice, the Tomahawks donned specialty jerseys inspired by the iconic Johnstown Jets, who played professional hockey in the historic Cambria County War Memorial Arena from 1950 to 1977. Though the Generals were able to get on the board first, the Tomahawks earned a 3-2 victory. Spencer DenBeste, who put together an impressive weekend, scored the game winning goal, which was his second goal of the night.

On Saturday, the Tomahawks hosted “Hat Trick or Treat Night” at the arena, with a costume parade on the ice during intermission and trick or treating around the arena concourse. Kids received souvenir canvas tote bags to help them carry their goodies. The Hawks also had American Sign Language interpreters participate in the National Anthem as part of ASL Awareness.

On the ice, the Tomahawks couldn’t seem to catch a break. Northeast broke the scoreless tie late in the 2nd period and went on to score two more in the 3rd. It looked like the Generals were going to earn themselves a shutout, but Spencer DenBeste put up Johnstown’s lone goal with six seconds remaining in the game. The final score was 3-1.

Sunday’s Undies Toss, one of hockey’s most unique promotions, got off to a slow start, with the Generals getting on the board first. Forward Drew Murphy would score his first NAHL goal, sending undies flying over the glass. The underwear was collected to be donated to the local Women’s Help Center.

The game would see multiple lead changes, with the Generals seeming to match the Tomahawks with every stride and goal through the 2nd and 3rd period. With a 3-3 tie, Christian Gorscak, who is currently committed to Niagara University, found the back of the net with three minutes remaining on the period. The Tomahawks would hold onto the lead, and looked to have an empty net goal that was waived off.

Goaltender David Tomeo was in net for Friday and Sunday’s contest. Tomeo’s record with the Tomahawks is now 4-1-0 with one shutout and a .944 save percentage.

Spencer DenBeste (F, #28) and David Tomeo (G, #30) earned honorable mentions in the NAHL Bauer East Division Star of the Game report.

The Tomahawks now sit at 2nd place in the East Division with 20 points. 1st place still belongs to the New Jersey Titans with 24 points, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights are in 3rd place with 19 points.

Tomahawks Split Road Series with Knights

The Johnstown Tomahawks hit the road to Pittston, Pennsylvania to finish a lengthy road trip in October, which saw them playing six games in between home stands. The East Division’s 3rd place Tomahawks faced off against the 2nd place Knights, looking to surpass them in the standings and gain ground on the division leading New Jersey Titans.

Coming into Friday’s contest, the Tomahawks were averaging 3 goals per game. Though they put up quite the effort with 40 shots on goal, they were only able to find the back of the net once, off the stick of Christian Gorscak. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to

Saturday’s contest would see a resurgence of the Tomahawks offense. Tristan Poissant, Chris Trouba, Spencer DenBeste, and Malik Alishlalov all beat WBS netminder Zach Stejskal en route to a 4-0 victory. Poissant, Trouba, Gorscak, DenBeste, and Alishlalov all had 2 points in the game. This was rookie defenseman Malik Alishlalov’s first career goal in the NAHL.

The Tomahawks defense put on quite the performance, limiting WBS to 22 shots on goal. Rookie goaltender Alex Tracy stopped every shot he faced on, earning his first career shutout victory. Tracy now accounts for 9 of the Tomahawks 16 points, with a record in net of 4-1-1.

With the split of the series, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights remain in 2nd place in the NAHL East Division, with the Johnstown Tomahawks in a very close 3rd, trailing by just one point.

The Tomahawks finally return home to close out October with a three game stand against the Northeast Generals.

Tomahawks Sweep Black Bears in Maryland

ODENTON, Maryland – The Johnstown Tomahawks looked to duplicate Friday’s success in the final game of the weekend series, and they did not disappoint.

Saturday’s bout proved to be a physical contest, with just over 20 penalties called between both squads. The Hawks and Bears battled a close one, taking a 1-1 tie into the third period.

Then, the Tomahawks offense took over while the defense held things down behind the blue line. Johnstown fired off 3 goals in the third, securing the win and the sweep. Bennett Stockdale, now the NAHL’s points leader with 18, picked up the game winning goal.

Maryland came into the series against Johnstown fresh off a two game sweep of the Knights in which they scored 12 goals. They were unable to come close to matching that offensive success against the Tomahawks.

Johnstown newcomer David Tomeo, a Black Bear himself during the 2018-19 season, stood tall in net. Tomeo’s homecoming in Odenton saw him stopping 75 of 77 shots over both games.

The Tomahawks remain in 3rd place in the East Division with 14 points off a record of 6-4-2, nipping at the heels of the WBS Knights (15 points) and first place New Jersey Titans (16 points).

Johnstown Offense Proves Unbearable for Maryland

ODENTON, Maryland. – The Johnstown Tomahawks faced off against the Maryland Black Bears for the first of a two game series on Friday. The Hawks would defeat the Black Bears, 5-1.

A recent addition to the Johnstown roster, goaltender David Tomeo started in net. He put together an impressive debut where he stopped 42 of 43 Maryland shots.

The Tomahawks offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the game, with 5 Tomahawks racking up multiple points in the contest. Bennett Stockdale now leads the team in total points (16) and assists (11), and Carson Gallagher remains the leading goal scorer (8).

Tomahawks Split Series with Nordiques

LEWISTON, Maine. – The Johnstown Tomahawks fell to the Maine Nordiques, 2-1. Much like Friday’s bout, the game was decided in the 3rd period. With the game tied at 1, the Nordiques put in what would be the game winning goal with just over 3 minutes left in regulation.

After splitting the series with Main, Johnstown finds themselves with 10 points (4-3-2) and slipping into 3rd place behind the New Jersey Titans (1st place) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights (2nd place).

Don’t Call it a Comeback – Hawks Win 5-4

LEWISTON, Maine. – The Johnstown Tomahawks hit the ice in front of just over 1,300 fans attending the inaugural home opener of the Maine Nordiques. While Johnstown got on the board first, the Nordiques would go on to score 4 unanswered goals through the 1st and 2nd period.

Going into the third period with a 4-1 deficit, the Tomahawks dug deep to score 4 of their own unanswered goals to fend off the Nordiques. Goaltender Blaine Moore picked up his first start and win of the young season.

Max Kouznetsov, who scored 2 goals in the contest, has the distinction of scoring the first NAHL regulation goal at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, home of the Nordiques.

Tomahawks Defeat Titans 5-2 (9/28/2019)

JOHNSTOWN, Penn. – The Johnstown Tomahawks returned home to face the New Jersey Titans for the first time since ending their season in Round 2 of the 2018-19 NAHL Robertson Cup Playoffs.
Guests were treated to a special celebrity appearance, as two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque met with fans throughout the game. The Ol’ Two Niner stuck around for the entirety of the game, recounting memories of 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, where he earned his first NHL contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins at a tryout camp.
Three banners were unveiled, commemorating the 2018-19 Johnstown Tomahawks, whose historic season saw them earn the NAHL East Division Championship, NAHL Regular Season Championship, and NAHL East Division Playoff Championship.
