TOMAHAWKS COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP – MOVE UP IN EAST DIVISION

Nov 21, 2020

The Johnstown Tomahawks completed the weekend sweep Saturday night against the New Jersey Titans after a 3-1 win.

John Gelatt opened the scoring for the Tomahawks with a power play goal coming from a rebound off New Jersey’s goaltender Berk Berkeliev. The two teams carried over the physicality from yesterday’s game into today. After a scrap in front of the Titans bench, the dust settled with a slashing penalty going to Jared Gerger to put the Titans on a power play, in which they would convert to tie the game at 1 to end the 1st period. Tomahawks goaltender Sam Evola made some big, timely saves in the opening period and throughout the game, keeping the Hawks in reach of another win.

Forward Anthony Mastromonica gave the Tomahawks the go-ahead-goal in the back half of the 2nd period. This goal would not only be the Big Mac Attack goal, scoring all fans in attendance a free Big Mac, but it would also go on to be the game-winner. John Gelatt assisted on the goal, getting another point on the weekend. Gelatt ended his weekend with two goals and two assists, tremendously helping the Tomahawks front-line. Going into the 3rd period the score and momentum were both in favor of the Tomahawks.

Only 24 seconds into the 3rd period, New Jersey’s Tommy Bannister would be assessed a five-minute misconduct penalty for elbowing Hawks forward Jay Ahearn, giving the Tomahawks an extended opportunity to add another goal to the scoresheet. The Hawks had a lot of good chances on the advantage and Ryan Poorman converted for the Hawks late on the man-advantage, netting his first goal of the season to extend the lead for the Tomahawks to 3-1.

Saturday night’s win would advance the Tomahawks to 2nd place in the East Division, passing New Jersey and the Maryland Black Bears, who the Tomahawks will face-off against next weekend on the road in Maryland. The game will be available for fans to watch on HockeyTV.

The Tomahawks will return to game action at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA on December 11 and 12 as we face off against the Black Bears once again. Tickets are available online at ticketmaster.com.
