Dec 11, 2016

PITTSTON, Pa – In a low-scoring contest, the Johnstown Tomahawks shut out the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre.

Johnstown and the Knights met in a Sunday matinee and both teams were looking to gain ground in the East Division.

The Tomahawks netted the game’s one and only goal at 14:55 of the first period when Edward Hirka fired a shot from the point that found its way behind Knights goaltender Grant Valentine. Logan Stork and Tommy Horn registed the helpers on Hirka’s first of the season.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would knock on the door in the second period, but Vinnie Purpura, who came in relief for Drew Hotte, would shut the door on the Knights.

The Knights would have opportunities to tie the game at 1-1 in the third period including a late power play chance but The Tomahawks defense stood tall and maintained the 1-0 lead for the victory.

In the win, Purpura stopped eight total Knights shots and improved his record to 7-2-1.

The Tomahawks will break for the holidays but will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 30 when they host the defending Robertson Cup champions, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. Saturday, Dec. 31 is the traditional New Year’s Eve contest at 6 p.m. against Fairbanks. The Tomahawks will give away 2017 Calendars while supplies last during both games.
