JOHNSTOWN – The Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Rochester Jr. Americans by a score of 2-1 in a nail-biter Friday night at 1st Summit Arena for their first home win of the young season.
The Tomahawks started off the contest in just about the worst way possible, giving up a goal on the first shot of the game just 30 seconds into the 1st period. The majority of the 1st period played out in a fashion that didn’t provide much excitement for either team, but the Tomahawks would add a goal of their own with a rocket from the point from captain Dylan Shane with assists to Caden Olenczak and Thomas Weekes.
The second period started, and the Tomahawks came out with a clear purpose to get in on the forecheck and control the pace of play. Rochester managed to register a couple of low-danger shots on goal but that was all for the period. About halfway through the frame, the Tomahawks were rewarded for their play, getting a goal from Ryan Flaherty with some help from Michal Capos and Taybor Aldrich, which would give them a 2-1 lead heading for the locker room.
The 3rd period was the definition of a stalemate as both teams were battling hard but for opposite reasons. The Tomahawks were fighting hard to play solid defense and maintain their lead, while Rochester was doing all they could to tie the game up at two. Zack Ferris decided he wouldn’t let that happen however, shutting the door for 59 straight minutes posting 32 saves following the first minute goal and backstopped his team to the nail-biting victory.
