BLAINE, Minn. – The Austin Bruins used two goals in the third period to edge out the Johnstown Tomahawks 3-2 in a close contest Friday morning at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.

The Tomahawks scored the game’s first goal when Donovan Ott capitalized on a turnover created by Tommy Horn.

Johnstown controlled the balance of the play during the first period as Austin could not solved goaltender Vinnie Purpura.

The second period saw a reversal of sorts, as Austin took the play and eventually beat Purpura. Justin Misiak’s wrist shot found space behind the young netminder to tie the game at one.

Johnstown responded late in the second period after the Bruins committted two infractions. Adam Pilewicz’s shot from the point went past the blocker of Austin goalie Alex Schilling to give the Tomahawks a 2-1 advantage going into the second intermission.

Austin tied the game midway through the third period with a deflection goal from John Wojciechowski. Cooper Sande registered the assist.

The Bruins kept pressing and gained the lead at 10:42 of the third period. Jon Richard fired a puck past Purpura to set the final score at 3-2.

Purpura, in the loss, stopped 16 of 19 Austin shots on goal. Schilling was victorious in a 26-save performance.

The Tomahawks conclude the NAHL Showcase Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Shreveport Mudbugs. The game can be viewed live on FastHockey.com.
