Conemaugh Health System Announced as Sponsor of Johnstown Tomahawks Kids Club

Sep 4, 2018

JOHNSTOWN – The Johnstown Tomahawks have announced Conemaugh Health System as Chopper’s Kids Club official corporate sponsor for the 2018-2019 NAHL hockey season. The initiative is part of the Tomahawks’ Healthyville program beginning this season.
Kids Club Outreach
“As we pursue our mission of Making Communities Healthier, we are working to reach local youth to instill healthy lifestyle habits early in life,” says Dr. Susan Williams, Chief Medical Officer, Conemaugh Health System. “Conemaugh has a strong focus on population health. Reaching our youth through this initiative will also help us reach their families and create a healthier environment at home.”
Chopper, the mascot for the Johnstown Tomahawks, will lead the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle in the community. “We’ve seen how influential Chopper is to young fans during our games and while out in the community,” says Mike Letizia, Head Coach for the Tomahawks. “He’s already a positive role model, and with the help of Conemaugh we can provide him the tools necessary to spread a positive message of healthy living.”
The Kids Club is open to all youth ages 14 and under. Parents and guardians of youth members will receive health videos featuring Chopper, worksheets to complete with their kids, and helpful health tips via email. Activities will be hosted each home game, including the opportunity to spin a prize wheel. Additional special events for Kids Club members will be hosted throughout the season.
Topics to be discussed throughout the season include, but are not limited to, health tips for heart, sleeping, proper nutrition, and staying hydrated, exercise, self-esteem, hand hygiene, safety topics including drug abuse, concussions, medication, and trauma prevention, acts of kindness, giving back, celebrating diversity, and learning.

Healthyville
In 2015, the Tomahawks and the surrounding communities joined together to bring the title of Kraft Hockeyville to Johnstown. Overwhelming community support and engagement for this celebration of Johnstown’s hockey history has now transformed to a new community effort spearheaded by the Tomahawks – Healthyville.
Healthyville is a new initiative for 2018 and primarily focuses on local school outreach to promote healthy decisions for youth in the community. Participating schools will host school assemblies for students, including special guest appearances by Chopper and Tomahawks’ players. Students will also receive activity books and opportunities for prizes.
“We’ve participated in school outreach for the last several years,” says Letizia. “This is just an expansion of what we’ve already done to keep students engaged in healthy behaviors. We hope
our players can be the positive role models that lead students on the right path for making good decisions, staying active, and eating well.”
Local organization support has already commenced for Healthyville, including engagement by the Jefferson Center for Population Health, Highmark Foundation, and the Cambria County Drug Coalition.
Two Tomahawks games this season will focus on the Healthyville initiative. Dates for Healthyville games are December 30 and March 29.
