Q. What is a billet/host family?
A. A billet or host family is where a player lives during the 8-month or so NAHL season.
Q. Is there a “typical” billet family?
A. No. Billet families could be made up of two-parent families, single-parent families, or even an individual living by themselves. What should be typical is the desire to make a positive impact in the players life.
Q. Are billet families paid?
A. Yes. A monthly stipend will be provided and required for EACH player in the house. This will help with any additional expenses needed in the household, but mostly for groceries.
Q. Can a billet family host more than one player?
A. Absolutely! The only requirement would be to allow for each of the players in your household to have their own adequate space/sleeping arrangement. Each player should also have reasonable and equal access to a restroom and other amenities.
Q. Who is responsible for any injuries or medical needs during the players stay at your household?
A. The players and their families. They must have their own medical insurance with their families; billet parents are never responsible for any medical payments.
Q. Will I have to pass a background check?
A. Yes. Background checks and a SafeSport certification are required before a player being placed with your family for the season.
Q. Will my player have to attend school or have a job?
A. Yes and no. All players who are of high-school age must be taking a certain number of required credits via online schooling as their schedule allows. Players do NOT have to find employment during the season, only if they choose to.
Q. What will we have to provide for the players?
A. You will need to provide a separate space for the player(s) that is furnished with a bed, clothing storage, access to a restroom and internet access. Also, you must provide your player(s) with nutritious meals including breakfast, lunch (when applicable), and dinner. Arguably most importantly, you should foster a positive, patient, and friendly environment in your home. Think of how you would want your own children to be treated away from home.
