HAWKS WIN 4-3 IN A SHOOTOUT

Oct 2, 2021

It wouldn’t take long for Johnstown’s 10th ever opening night to get started off with a bang. Forwards TJ Koufis (JHT), and Laker Aldridge (MYD) welcomed the fans back with some old time hockey right off the bat. Both benches received the fire up, however it was Maryland (Aden Bruich – F) who lit up the games’ first lamp. But it wouldn’t stop captain Holt Oliphant from tying the game on the power-play, making it 1-1. Maryland eventually took the lead back at the end of the period with a power-play goal of their own from forward Ryan Bottrill, making it 2-1.

Halfway through the game, another power-play goal was scored. Stephen Kyrkostas (F) would sneak it home past Maryland goaltender Michael Morelli, tying the game once again. However, forward Branden Piku for Maryland responded to take the lead back for the Black Bears, almost exactly two minutes later.

Looking like Maryland would take the game late in the third period, Kyrkostas scored his second of the game, tying things again at 3-3. Overtime wouldn’t be enough, so a shootout was needed. In the end, two words, Stephen Kyrkostas! Your Tomahawks captured the extra point, and the 4-3 win over the Maryland Black Bears, after he and Zachary Murray (F) scored the only goals in the shootout for Johnstown.
