Hawks Win In Shootout Thriller Over Hat Tricks

Nov 11, 2022

The Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks in a shootout 6-5 on Saturday night in Johnstown as we celebrated Veterans Day.

Nash Jacobsma opened the scoring on Friday night for Danbury on the power play. Johnstown responded with a goal from Gabriel Lunn seven minutes later, tying the game at one. Then with just 2:07 remaining in the opening period, Ryan Johnson scored for Danbury to regain the lead for the Hat Tricks at 2-1 to end the first period.

Logan Nickerson and Wyatt Stefan scored for Danbury in the second period to extend the lead to 4-1. Stefan’s goal would end the night for Johnstown netminder Colin Purcell at the 11:21 mark of the period, and Adam Johnson headed back in between the pipes for the Tomahawks after his 4-1 win Thursday. The Tomahawks regrouped and came back with goals from Will Lawrence and James Barbour, setting the scene for the third period with a 4-3 lead for Danbury.

3:01 into the third period, Will Moore tied the game for Johnstown, followed by the go-ahead goal from Anthony Galante with 9:12 remaining in regulation. Luka Sukovic responded for Danbury with a goal on the power play late in the third period to send the game to overtime.

The Tomahawks had a power play opportunity presented to them with just seven seconds remaining in regulation but were not able to convert sending the game on to a shootout.

This was an interesting situation for both teams as Matt O’Donnell and Adam Johnson both had to face their former teams in a one-on-one shootout contest to determine the game. Only one goal was scored in the entire shootout as Galante found the back of the net to secure a 6-5 win for Johnstown and a weekend sweep against Danbury.

The Tomahawks are back in action next weekend at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA as we welcome the Maryland Black Bears back to town on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19.
