The Johnstown Tomahawks Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable, first-hand experience working in the field of sports. Those college students wishing to pursue careers in Sports Management, PR/Communications, Community Relations and Game-Day Events, and Sales/Marketing are encouraged to apply. Our interns are an integral part of the Tomahawks organization and are given the opportunity to directly contribute their knowledge and talents to the team. We are seeking highly-motivated and hard-working individuals who share a passion for hockey and a desire to further their education.

Exact hours and time requirements vary depending on the type of internship, but all interns must be available for some office hours and game nights, with the exception of summer interns. All internships are unpaid, and interns must be receiving college credit.

The Communications internship program with the Johnstown Tomahawks hockey team is a hands-on program that will assist the Public Relations department with responsibilities regarding social media, video content creation, feature writing, statistical compilation, press events, media outreach, and more for the 2019-2020 season.
This position is primarily a Game Day position, however there will also be hours needed on non-game days for various video projects and team events, and interns MUST be available to work ALL TOMAHAWKS HOME HOCKEY GAMES AND RECEIVE COURSE CREDIT FOR EITHER FALL OR SPRING SEMESTER OR BOTH! Game day is a high-energy, fast-paced environment. The best candidates for this internship will be able to learn and adapt quickly, multitask effectively, communicate clearly, keep a high level of positive energy, and show an overall passion for the industry and our brand.
Assigned tasks will include:
Assisting in video projects such as clipping highlights, in-game video elements, player features, etc. for use in the team’s digital marketing efforts
Assisting in the development of social media strategies and campaigns throughout the season
Assisting in Tomahawks game day social media efforts
Assist in brainstorming storylines, gathering stats and other pertinent information for feature stories, game notes, and broadcasts
Distributing Game Notes to various media in attendance at Tomahawks hockey games
Coordinate and oversee post-game interview sessions between players and members of the media
Assist in media efforts for major theme nights
Assist with various game operations initiatives
Other duties as assigned
- Must be available to work all home games during internship period
- Strong familiarity in video editing and a working knowledge of various video editing suites is highly recommended, and having easy access to an editing program is a plus
- Must possess strong knowledge of social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, etc.)
- Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge/Familiarity of Photoshop
- A strong knowledge of the game of hockey highly recommended
Candidates must be in a school certified internship program and must receive college credit for either Fall or Spring term of 2019-20 school year to qualify. All positions are unpaid, and candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS/EVENT PLANNING INTERNSHIP
The Johnstown Tomahawks are looking for driven, enthusiastic interns to join the team during the 2019-2020 season. The Tomahawks celebrated their 7th Anniversary Season in 2018-2019 and have won numerous community and league awards since their establishment. Interns will be exposed to various departments and tasks, in addition to the specific roles of this position. The ideal candidate will have a professional demeanor, with the ability to communicate clearly to executives at all levels (both internally and externally) and take pride in all work they complete. The individual needs to be detail oriented, have ability to manage various tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines. The ability to work independently by taking initiative, recommending solutions, and making informed decisions is a necessity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Must be available to work all home games during internship period. Special events and nontraditional work hours will be required
Assist in donation request fulfillment, and responding to donation inquires
Schedule and research potential community events, and develop new community partners
Interact professionally with both clients and fans
Provide first-class customer service on game days and as a representation of the Tomahawks brand at special events.
Opportunity to work collaboratively with and learn from other departments across the organization, including marketing, sponsorship, sales, retail, game entertainment and media relations
Perform other duties as assigned

OFFICE/ GAME DAY OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP
The Johnstown Tomahawks organization of the NAHL is looking for multiple FOR CREDIT ONLY Office/Game Operations Interns during the 2019-2020 hockey season. Candidates should be current college students, preferably a junior, senior or graduate level, and must be able to dedicate 20 hours a week to the internship. THIS IS A FOR CREDIT ONLY INTERNSHIP. Strong writing and verbal skills are essential, as is the ability to work well in a dynamic, small-office environment. The successful candidate should be dependable, able to handle multiple tasks, and work long hours (evenings, weekends & holidays included).
Interns will be required to attend every Tomahawks home game plus additional team functions during the time of the internship
Interns will be required to work office hours during the week. During office hours, interns will get experience in ticket sales, corporate fulfillment, social media management, business administration, marketing, and more
Interns may be required to perform as the mascot during community appearances
Notable Game Day Roles: Set Up/Break Down of Concourse, Fan Assistance Table, Chuck A Puck Tables, Kids Club, Production Assistant, Credential Table, Mascot Handler, Youth Hockey Initiatives and other duties as assigned.
- Pursuit of Sport Management, Marketing, Communication, and/or business degree preferred.
- Computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong communication skills and telephone etiquette.
- Ability to multi-task and handle a variety of projects.
- Basic knowledge of ice hockey encouraged but not required.
Must receive college credit
Available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, including nights and weekends.
Available to work every home game during their internship time.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must be able to lift and carry 25lbs.
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY: The sales internship will provide basic sales training and an opportunity for hands-on experience with building leads, qualification calling, and customer interactions. The intern will spend time in the executive offices but will also assist with in game activation of the sales process. Experience gained through this internship will leave the intern prepared for an entry level sales position upon exit.
- Candidates should be enrolled in college and should receive college credit
- A background in sales, marketing or business development
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and a desire to learn the trade
- Be able to be in office for mentorship a minimum 15 hours per week
- Be able to attend every Tomahawks home game throughout the internship dates.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
The steps of the sales cycle
How to assist with lead generation, prospecting, calling members/leaders of groups associated with theme nights, order entry and ticket delivery
How to interact with customers on game nights, including assisting with in-game recognition/receptions and pre and post-game fan experiences
How to promote the Tomahawks throughout the Johnstown area and surrounding communities.
Physical Demands & Working Environment
While engaged in the activities of this internship, the student will be subjected to a variety of business setting that will include sitting/standing for long periods of time, speaking on the phone while simultaneously typing notes, etc. The student must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The student is exposed to an office environment, with noise levels usually moderate and a home-game setting, with noise levels exceeding a typical comfort level. The successful candidate should be dependable, able to handle multiple tasks, and work long hours (evenings, weekends & holidays included).
