Soldotna, AK – In the opening game of the weekend series, the Kenai River Brown Bears edged out the Johnstown Tomahawks 3-2 Friday night at the Soldotna Sports Center.
Neither team found the back of the net for most of the first period. Gil Garcia was able to open the scoring for Kenai River with a power play goal with just under two minutes remaining.
In the second period, Johnstown was able to tie the game up with a power play goal of their own. Samuel Solensky (assisted by Joe Kile and Toby Sengvongxay) scored his 12th of the season to even things up at one.
Not long after, Sacha Guillemain scored another power play goal to put Kenai River back up 2-1.
The third period saw the Tomahawks battle back and even the score once again. This time it was Roman Kraemer (assisted by Solensky and Karim Del Ponte) scoring his 11th goal of the season.
Just when it looked like the game was going to overtime, Kraemer was assessed a major penalty and ejected after checking one of the Brown Bears into the boards.
This gave Kenai River five minutes of power play time with around seven minutes remaining in regulation. Johnstown stayed strong, with Jack Leavy making a couple key saves to keep the score tied.
But with one second left on the power play, Garcia scored his second of the night to put the Brown Bears back on top 3-2.
The Tomahawks pulled Leavy for the extra attacker, but their last-minute efforts fell short.
