Rebels Top Tomahawks 3-2

ASTON, Pa – The Johnstown Tomahawks dropped a hard-fought contest to the Aston Rebels 3-2 Saturday night at the IceWorks Skating Complex.

Aston scored the game’s first goal when Dom Garcia fired a shot from the left circle that found its way past Tomahawks goaltender Drew Hotte.

The Rebels added to their advantage with 44 seconds left in the first period when Gianluca Esteves scored a power play goal.

The Tomahawks went to work to try to solve Rebels goaltender Mareks Mitens in the second period and their persistence paid off.

At 13:15 of the second period, Tomahawks defenseman Brandon Young sent a wrist shot behind Mitens for his third of the season. Dalton Hunter picked up the assist.

In the third period, the Tomahawks knotted the game up at 2-2 when Donovan Ott scored at 3:53 of the period. Nick Bruce registered the lone assist.

Aston regained their advantage with Esteves’ second goal of the game at 15:53 of the third period to set the final at 3-2.

Mitens halted 26 of 28 Tomahawks shots while Hotte stopped 15 of 18 Rebels shots on goal.

The Tomahawks are back home for a two-game series with the New Jersey Titans February 17-18 at the War Memorial. Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. the Tomahawks host Penguins alumnus Pierre Larouche (courtesy of TUDI Mechanical) to meet fans and drop the ceremonial first puck. Additionally, Friday’s game is Red Out Night presented of HealthCare First Credit Union with fans encouraged to wear red to support heart health.

Saturday night is Youth Hockey Night and a Thundersticks giveaway presented by Claysburg Pizza. The first 1,500 fans will receive Thundersticks to cheer on the Hawks.
