Tomahawks Clinch Playoff Berth with 3-2 Win Over Jr. K-Wings

Brandon Reinholz scored with 1:12 remaining in the third period and Jake Fairchild added two assists as the Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Wings West Arena in Kalamazoo, MI. The two points earned in the win allowed the Tomahawks to clinch a spot in the Robertson Cup Playoffs for their first season in Johnstown and the sixth time in franchise history.

Chris Truehl made key saves throughout the game, helping the Tomahawks pick up the win in a physical game. He stopped 30 of 32 shots for the win, his fourth against Kalamazoo (34-18-5). Marcus Due-Boje stopped 32 of 35 shots in the loss.

Kalamazoo got on the board first as Patrick Spellacy scored a power-play goal at 12:48 of the first period.

Ian Spencer tied the game in the second period as his shot from above the faceoff circles found its way past Due-Boje at 8:07 of the second period for a power-play goal. The goal was his fifth of the season and second in the last three games. Cody Gylling added an assist to extend his point streak to three games (0-3-3).

Kalamazoo regained the lead early in the third period as Robbie Payne scored at 2:14.

Johnstown (25-20-12) tied the game on Jeff Bergh’s goal at 7:04 before Reinholz scored the game-winner late in the period.  Jaycob McCombs added an assist on Bergh’s goal in his first game since January 19 vs. Michigan.

The win improves the Tomahawks record against the Jr. K-Wings to 5-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Kalamazoo. Johnstown has now earned points in six of their last ten games (4-4-2), while Kalamazoo has lost five of their last six.
