Tomahawks Comeback Falls Short Against Ice Dogs

FAIRBANKS, AK –The Johnstown Tomahawks came back from a three goal deficit, but a pair of late goals gave the Fairbanks Ice Dogs a 6-4 win on Friday night at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

 

            Fairbanks took a 2-0 lead after one period, thanks to goals from Jakob Stridsberg at 14:39 and Ryner Gorowsky at 18:11. Jesper Ohrvall extended the lead with a power-play goal 37 seconds into the second period.

 

            The Tomahawks got on the board halfway through the second period, as a stolen puck from Brady Bender led to a two-on-one opportunity for Jake Houston and Collin Montgomery. Montgomery finished the job, scoring his first goal of the season past the glove of goaltender Patrick Munson at 9:56.

 

            Fairbanks regained the three goal lead just 15 seconds later, as Ethan Somoza scored his 26th goal of the season. John Zimmerman added the assist on the goal.

 

            Zac Robbins started the Tomahawks rally late in the second period, scoring on a shot from his knees inside the left face-off circle. Tanner Barnes and Steve Quagliata added the assists on the goal.

 

            Nick LeSage pulled Johnstown within one, taking  a pass from Filips Buncis and scoring a shot from in front of the net at 4:15 of the third period.

 

            Robbins tied the game at 10:33, chipping the puck past Munson for his second goal of the game. Robbins has now scored nine points (six goals, three assists) in his last four games, nearly doubling his season point total.

 

            In the end Fairbanks earned the win with two goals in the final 3:40. Hans Gorowsky regained the lead with 3:40 left in regulation, before Somoza set the final score with an empty-net goal at 19:25.

 

            Munson earned the win, stopping 27 of 31 shots. Ryan Bednard took the loss in relief, stopping 10 of 11 shots. Jake Gwillim started the game, allowing four goals on 29 shots. The Tomahawks went 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
