Tomahawks Down Ice Rays 2-1 in NAHL Showcase Opener

BLAINE, Minn. – The Johnstown Tomahawks opened their 2015 North American Hockey League Showcase schedule with a 2-1 win over the Corpus Christi Ice Rays Wednesday afternoon at the Schwan Super Rink.

 

            Luke Lynch got the Tomahawks on the board first, scoring 17:23 into the second period. Austin Heakins added the assist on the first goal scored by Lynch since he rejoined the team earlier this week.

 

            Kelly O’Brien extended the Tomahawks lead with his first goal of the season, scoring at 2:20 of the third period. Steve Quagliata added the assist on the goal.

 

            With 1:02 remaining in regulation, the Ice Rays got their lone goal of the game, as Carter Johnson scored a power-play goal. Steve Bryant picked up the assist on the goal.

 

            Jake Gwillim earned his second win of the season, stopping 25 of 26 shots. Graham Hunt suffered the loss, allowing two goals on 16 shots. The Tomahawks went 0-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

 

            The Tomahawks continue their 2015 NAHL Showcase schedule tomorrow morning against the Brookings Blizzard. Face-off is set for 11:30 a.m. EST from Blaine, Minn.

 

            Johnstown opens its 2015-16 home schedule Oct. 16 and 17 against New Jersey, with a special appearance by Hockey Hall of Famer and National Hockey League legend Bobby Hull scheduled for the Oct. 16 game.
