Tomahawks Drop Opening Game Against Ice Dogs

FAIRBANKS– The Johnstown Tomahawks suffered an 8-3 loss in the opening game of their weekend series against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.

           

            Fairbanks (12-2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, thanks to goals by Cayden Cahill at 13:01 and Ryner Gorowsky at 13:48.

 

            Cameron Smith got the Tomahawks on the board with his third goal of the season at 15:15 of the second period. Brendan Jaquay and Zak Galambos added the assists on the shorthanded goal.

 

            The Ice Dogs extended their lead to 4-1, with Todd Burgess scoring a power-play goal at 17:57 and Evan Somoza scoring with 1:13 remaining in the second period.

 

            Johnstown (8-5-3) pulled back within one, as Kelley O’Brien scored his seventh goal of the season at 4:32 of the third period. O’Brien has now scored goals in three consecutive games.

 

            Fairbanks responded with four goals to take an 8-2 lead with 3:24 remaining in regulation.

 

            Casey Linkenheld scored the Tomahawks third goal of the game, scoring at 18:08. Dalton Hunter picked up the assist on the goal.

 

            Gavin Nieto earned the win, stopping 26 of 29 shots. Nick DeSimone suffered the loss, stopping 30 of 34 shots. He was replaced by Jake Gwillim prior to the start of the third period. Gwillim stopped 18 of 22 shots in the period.

 

            Johnstown went 0-for-6 on the power play and 8-for-9 on the penalty kill.

 

Johnstown closes out the weekend series against Fairbanks Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. EST. They return home to begin an 11-game homestand with a three-game series against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Nov. 12-14.
