Tomahawks Fall to Black Bears Friday

Feb 25, 2022

The Johnstown Tomahawks fell just short of victory Friday night, losing to the Maryland Black Bears by a final of 6-5.

The Tomahawks got the first goal of the game as Johnny Ulicny scored his tenth of the season 6:38 in, but Maryland responded immediately, tying it up 41 seconds later with a goal from Miles Gunty. Kevin Scott then gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead with their two goals coming just 1:22 apart. Jack Blanchett then extended Maryland’s lead to 3-1 with his ninth goal of the season. In the last minute of the period, Jake Black scored his 31st goal of the season to make it a one-goal game, still in Maryland’s favor, heading into the 2nd period.

Jacob Brockman netted Maryland’s fourth goal of the game 5:31 into the 2nd period, followed by a goal from Jesse Horacek, making it 5-1 Maryland. Johnstown was held off the scoresheet in the 2nd period with Black Bears goaltender Luca Di Pasquo making eight saves.

Sean Ramsay opened the scoring in the 3rd with a power play goal, making it a two-goal game once again. As they had done throughout the night, Maryland responded less than 60 seconds later with a goal from Tyler Young, making the score 6-3 Black Bears. Despite a late effort with goals coming from Stephen Kyrkostas and Black for his second goal of the game, the Tomahawks fell just short of the comeback as Maryland edged Johnstown 6-5.

The final game of the three game weekend series will be held tomorrow, Saturday, February 26 with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM. Call 814-536-4625 for tickets.
