Tomahawks Finish Strong on the West Coast, Defeat Fresno 4-3

Jeff Bergh scored the game-winner less than seven minutes into the third period and Brandon Reinholz added a goal and an assist as the Johnstown Tomahawks picked up the weekend sweep defeating the Fresno Monsters, 4-3, Saturday night at Selland Arena.

Bergh’s goal was his fourth in his last 10 games. Andrew McDonald provided the assist on Bergh’s goal, giving him four points (1-3-4) on the weekend against his former team.

With the win, Johnstown (14-7-6) finished with a 3-1 record on its West Coast road trip while moving just five points behind North Division-leading Jamestown.

After Ian Janco gave Fresno (6-15-3) an early 1-0 lead, Casey Nelson tied the game with a power-play goal at 14:46. It was Nelson’s fifth power-play goal of the season, giving him the league lead for defensemen. It was also the 31st power-play goal of the season for the team, giving them sole possession of the league lead.

Jordan Watt made it 2-1 Tomahawks with his goal at 17:03. Watt now has four points (2-2-4) in his last five games.

Fresno’s Dan Sherer tied the game at 4:30 of the second period. He would add two assists finish the game with three points.

Johnstown regained the lead when Brandon Reinholz scored with just over five minutes remaining in the third period. The goal was his 12th of the season, tying Captain Mitch Kontny for the team lead.

Matt Salituro tied the game just 37 seconds into the third period before Bergh scored the game winner later in the period.

Colin Brennan picked up his third straight win, stopping 32 of 35 shots while Fresno’s Macauley Haight took the loss, stopping 20 of 24.

The Tomahawks return to the Cambria County War Memorial to take on the Jamestown Ironmen Dec. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. The weekend will feature appearances by the Hanson Brothers on Dec. 14 and by Pittsburgh Penguins Matt Cooke and Chris Kunitz on Dec. 15.
