Tomahawks Move Closer To Playoff Berth with 3-2 Victory

 

JOHNSTOWN, PA –The Johnstown Tomahawks moved closer to clinching a berth in the Robertson Cup Playoffs with a 3-2 win on Faith and Family Night at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Tomahawks can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Sunday afternoon.

           

            Tomahawks goaltender Jake Gwillim faced an early challenge, as he had to defend a penalty shot from Matt Menta 17 seconds into the game. Gwillim stopped the shot with his right leg to keep the game scoreless.

 

            The game only remained scoreless for 13 more seconds, as Alex Alger took a long pass from Zac Robbins and fired a shot past goaltender Chad Catt for his 20th goal of the season. Tanner Barnes also added an assist on the goal.

 

            Soo tied the game later in the period, as Mitch Vanderburg took advantage of a quick pass from Trevor Cope, scoring at 13:04. Brad Pung also added an assist on the power-play goal.

 

            The game remained deadlocked at one, until Alex Jaeckle scored on a wide-open net at 13:12 of the second period. Nick Le Sage provided the cross-ice pass that led to the power-play goal, while Andrew Romano also added an assist.

 

            Johnstown extended its lead less than two minutes later, as Luke Lynch took rebound from Lane Valimont before shooting it over the leg of Catt at 15:09. Joe Drabin also provided an assist on the goal.

 

            Soo pulled back within one early in the third period, as Cope scored at 2:38. Sandis Zolmanis and Vanderburg added assists on the goal.

           

            Gwillim earned the win, stopping 31 of 33 shots. The win was his first since stopping 45 of 50 shots at Springfield on January 29. Catt suffered the loss, allowing three goals on 25 shots.

 

            The Tomahawks went 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
