TOMAHAWKS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN OVER MARYLAND

The Johnstown Tomahawks opened the 2023-2024 season with a 5-1 win over NAHL East Division rival, the Maryland Black Bears.

The opening period kicked off with a strong start as the Tomahawks were eager to secure their inaugural victory of the 2023-2024 season. Reid Lune ignited the scoreboard, notching the first goal of the season for the Tomahawks thanks to assists from Will Lawrence and Alexey Yarmulnik. This goal granted the Tomahawks a 1-0 advantage. Shortly thereafter, Taybor Aldrich skillfully found the back of the net, supported by assists from Ryan Johnson and Dylan McElhinny, expanding the Tomahawks’ lead to 2-0. Nevertheless, just one minute before the end of the first period, Maryland managed to trim the lead, bringing the score to 2-1.

The second period was a whirlwind of activity, highlighted by some remarkable saves from Tomahawks’ goaltender, Jacob Osborne. However, the sole goal of the period was netted by Tomahawks’ forward Tomas Vleck, courtesy of an assist from Nick White. With this goal, the Tomahawks headed to the locker room with a 3-1 lead.

The Tomahawks kicked off the third period in style, capitalizing on a power play opportunity with a goal by Justin Gibson, with assists from Zach Aben and Tomas Vleck. This impressive play stretched the Tomahawks’ lead to 4-1. Lukas Klemm added to the excitement with an empty-net goal, further extending their advantage to 5-1. Ultimately, the Johnstown Tomahawks emerged victorious, defeating the Maryland Black Bears 5-1 and commencing their season with a well-deserved win.
