Tomahawks Score Five In Second, Defeat Eagles 5-2

The Johnstown Tomahawks scored five goals in the second period in a 5-2 victory over the Soo Eagles on Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The Tomahawks set a team record with five goals in the second period, while tying the NAHL season high for goals in a period set by Fairbanks.

Soo got on the board first, as John O’Connor scored on a shot past the legs of Tomahawks goaltender Ryan Bednard at 9:35 of the first period. Mitch Vanderburg added the assist on the goal.

Casey Linkenheld tied the game for the Tomahawks early in the second period. Recktenwald added the assist on Linkenheld’s fourth goal of the season.

Zac Robbins gave the Tomahawks their first lead of the game, as his shot from the right face-off struck the right leg of Soo goaltender Jack Berry and slid past the goal line at 5:32. Peter Bates and Steve Quagliata added assists on the goal.

Just over a minute later, Drabin made it 3-1 with his first goal of the game. Joe Drabin and Dalton Hunter earned the assists on Recktenwald’s fourth goal of the season.

Soo cut the deficit to 3-2 at 9:23 of the second period, as Nick Belger scored on a breakaway, initiated with a pass from Darren Brady.

Jake Houston regained the Tomahawks two-goal lead with a breakaway goal of his own at 12:02. Drabin’s shot deflected off of Berry, before sliding over the line. Rectenwald and Hunter each added assists on the goal.

Recktenwald set the final at 5-2 with a goal from the right side of Berry just 35 seconds later.

Bednard earned the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots, while Berry allowed five goals on 39 shots in the loss. Neither team scored with the man advantage, as Johnstown went 0-for-3 and Soo went 0-for-5.
