Tomahawks Shutout Ironmen, Win Third-Straight Meeting of the Season
Johnstown, PA–If there was any doubt that Johnstown and Jamestown are fierce North-Division rivals, that was erased Friday night as both teams got physical in a game that included several scrums and two fights. When the dust settled, Colin Brennan recorded a shutout and Andrew McDonald extended his point streak to three games with a goal and an assist as the Tomahawks picked up a dominating 5-0 victory in front of 3,388 at the Cambria County War Memorial.
In his third-straight start, Brennan stopped all 19 shots he faced to get the franchise’s first shutout since March 17, 2012. He also picked up his third consecutive win.
Johnstown (15-7-6) made good use of the power-play, converting two of eight opportunities while stopping Jamestown on all three of its chances. The Tomahawks have now scored eight power-play goals against Jamestown in three meetings this season.
Connor Wright got the Tomahawks on the board first as his shot from between the circles got past Reid Mimmack for his fourth goal of the season at 12:17. Wright has eight points (4-4-8) in his last 10 games. With less than a minute remaining in the first period, Jesse Kessler made it 2-0 on a power-play goal. Cody Gylling provided an assist on the goal, extending his point streak to three games.
Jamestown’s Matt Lanzillotti hit Andrew McDonald in front of the penalty boxes at 6:39 of the second period igniting a fight between Connor Wright and Luc Gerdes near Jamestown’s blue line. This would be the first in a string of altercations between the two clubs.
Jesse Kessler and Elliot Tisdale made contact at 10:21 before getting together and dropping the gloves near center ice.
The Tomahawks did not settle for a two-goal lead as Jordan Watt’s shot deflected off the glove of Mimmack at 12:10 to make the score 3-0. Watt increased his scoring streak to three games.
Brandon Reinholz scored at 8:19 to make it a 4-0 and just 10 seconds later Andrew McDonald made it 5-0.
With the win, the Tomahawks are now just three points behind the Ironmen in the North Division. They have won three-straight games and all three meetings this season against Jamestown (18-7-3).
The Tomahawks and Ironmen finish the weekend series at the War Memorial Saturday night at 7 P.M. before traveling to Port Huron for games on Dec. 21 and 22.
