The Northeast Generals defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks 5-4 on Sunday afternoon, handing the Tomahawks their first regulation loss at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA this season.
The game got started with Alex Tertyshny taking a hooking penalty 6:55 into the opening period. Jay Ahearn took advantage, scoring a wraparound goal on the power play to break the ice for the Tomahawks Sunday afternoon. Shortly after Reed Stark scored his sixth goal of the season to make it 2-0 for the Tomahawks, scoring off the rebound from Dominic Schimizzi’s initial shot. At the 17:28 mark, Max Neill got called for tripping to give the Generals a power play. Jonathan Young scored only ten seconds into the power play to get on the board for the Generals, taking them into intermission only down by one. All three opening periods in the weekend series ended with either a one goal lead or a tie, keeping things close.
Will Margel continued his scoring ways to begin the 2nd period with his fourth goal of the weekend, scoring 1:07 into the period to extend the Tomahawks lead back to two with assists to John Gelatt and Max Neill. Six and a half minute later, Margel scored again for his fifth goal of the weekend and to extend the lead to 4-1. Northeast’s Jonathan Young singlehandedly changed the pace of the game for the Generals, scoring two goals in 44 seconds to make it a one goal game again just like that. With only 1:23 remaining in the period, Alex Tertyshny scored his fifth goal of the season which would tie the game for the Generals, erasing their three-goal deficit to send the game to the 3rd period knotted up at 4.
It didn’t take the Generals long to take the lead in the 3rd period with Tertyshny scoring his second goal of the game. His goal would go on to be the game-winning goal Sunday afternoon to give the Generals the lead at 5-4. The Tomahawks had multiple good-looks in the 3rd period in an attempt to tie things up yet again, but just could not find the back of the net to come through with the win.
