Jan 22, 2022

The Johnstown Tomahawks dominated the Maine Nordiques Saturday night in Lewiston, earning the weekend sweep with a 7-2 win.

Maine scored the opening goal for the second day in a row, with Patrick Schmiedlin scoring 5:28 into the game. It looked as though the Tomahawks were going into the intermission down one, but Stephen Kyrkostas netted his thirteenth goal of the season to tie it up after the first 20 minutes.

Sean Ramsay gave Johnstown its first lead of the night 4:52 into the 2nd period, scoring his tenth goal of the season. A minute later, the Tomahawks were headed to the power play, where Holt Oliphant scored on a deflection from Jacob Badal’s shot on net. 57 seconds later, the Tomahawks scored again with Zach Murray getting a deflection off David Wilcox’s shot, giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead. Murray’s goal ended the night for Maine netminder Gus Holt as Avery Sturtz took over between the pipes. Aidan Connolly made it a two-goal game, scoring a shorthanded goal. Despite David Matousek getting called for tripping, the Tomahawks responded with a shorthanded goal of their own as Egan Schmitt made it a 5-2 game. Johnstown wasn’t done yet though as Noah Wagner score his third goal of the season with just over one minute to go in the period, giving the Tomahawks a demanding 6-2 lead as they headed to the locker room.

Johnstown added onto their lead in the 3rd with Kyrkostas getting his second goal of the game and third goal of the weekend series 6:54 into the period. Newly acquired goaltender Matt O’Donnell stood tall in net, keeping the Nordiques off the board and helping Johnstown win in dominating fashion Saturday night in Maine.

The Tomahawks will head to Maryland next weekend to close out January with two games against the Black Bears down in Odenton at Piney Orchard Arena on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29.
