Tomahawks sweep pre-season series

Aug 27, 2014

The Johnstown Tomahawks completed their pre-season series of exhibition games in Altoona on Aug. 31 with their second victory in less than 24 hours, as the team now begins preparations for the season opener on the road against new in-state rivals the Keystone Ice Miners on Sept. 13.

Just roughly 13 hours after the Tomahawks topped the visiting Springfield Pics of the USPHL with a 6-1 win Saturday night, Johnstown again hosted Springfield at Galactic Ice in Altoona for a Sunday morning finale to the pre-season exhibition series.

Johnstown won the second contest 4-3, paced by a pair of goals from returning center Tanner Barnes. Defenseman Dakoda Menslage and newcomer Peter Bates also scored.

Goaltender Jake Gwillim stopped 25 of 28 shots in the victory.

On Saturday, goaltender Ryan Bednard stopped 26 of 27 shots, while rookie forward Zac Robbins led the Tomahawks with two goals. Menslage, returning forward Garrison Sanipass, first-round pick and Greensburg native Dalton Hunter, and rookie defenseman Steve Quagliata also scored in the Saturday night victory.

“We learned a lot about these guys this weekend, which is exactly what you want to do in a pre-season game,” head coach Mike Letizia said following Sunday’s win.

The Tomahawks’ regular season schedule begins on the road Sept. 13. Johnstown’s home opener is Oct. 25 against the new in-state rival, the Keystone Ice Miners.
