Tomahawks Triumph in First NAHL Showcase Game Against El Paso

The Johnstown Tomahawks opened the 2023 NAHL Showcase with a, 4-1 win over the El Paso Rhinos of the South division of the NAHL.

El Paso opened the scoring with a power play goal nine minutes into the game. The teams engaged in a spirited back-and-forth battle, each eager to secure their first victory of the showcase. However, with just over a minute remaining in the opening period, defenseman Justin Gibson netted his second goal of the season, assisted by Will Lawrence and Alexey Yarmulnik. As a result, the score was tied at 1 at the conclusion of the first period.

Entering the second period of the game, the Tomahawks found themselves in control with a 2-1 lead over the El Paso Rhinos. This advantage was established by none other than Isaac Holt, who notched his very first goal in his NAHL career. Holt’s remarkable achievement was made possible by an assist from the seasoned veteran, Ryan Panico. As the game progressed, despite the intensity and effort put forth by both teams, the scoreboard remained unchanged at 2-1, Tomahawks after 40 minutes of intense play. Isaac Holt’s memorable goal continued to stand as the solitary point scored during that period.

In the concluding period, the Johnstown Tomahawks maintained their firm control over the game. Their captain, Zach Aben, led the way by demonstrating his scoring expertise, netting not just one but two power-play goals. Aben’s initial goal was skillfully assisted by Tomas Vleck and Will Lawrence, and his second goal during that period also saw Vleck providing the crucial assist.

In the crease, goaltender Jacob Osborne displayed his exceptional skills, tallying an impressive total of 29 saves over the course of the game. His stellar performance served as a formidable last line of defense, frustrating the El Paso Rhinos’ offensive efforts. The Johnstown Tomahawks would go on to win by a score of 4-1 in their first game of the NAHL Showcase. 

Game two of the NAHL Showcase will feature the Johnstown Tomahawks going head-to-head against the Kenai River Brown Bears, with the puck drop scheduled for 9:15 PM EST tomorrow night.
