Tomahawks Win 3-1, Split Showcase Series 2-2

By Kayla Johnston

The Johnstown Tomahawks are starting to gain some momentum, picking up their second win of the season Saturday afternoon against the Bismarck Bobcats.  Johnstown wrapped up the NAHL Showcase with a great team effort and a strong performance in net from Colin DeAugustine.

Joe Drabin continued his point streak to four games with a backhanded goal in the first period to give the Tomahawks an early 1-0 lead.  Matt Meier setup the play from the top of the left face-off circle, finding a wide open Joe Drabin between the circles.

Joe Drabin returned the favor midway through the second period, assisting on Matt Meier’s goal that put Johnstown up 2-0 over the Bobcats.  Bismarck fought back late in the second period with a power-play goal by Huba Sekesi to cut the deficit in half.

Shane Cuckovich added to Johnstown’s lead at 6:10 into the third period.  Cuckovich cleared the puck on the penalty kill and deflected it off Bismarck’s goalie, Aaron Nelson, to give Cuckovich his first shorthanded goal of the season.

Colin DeAugustine picked up his second win, stopping 29 of 30 shots. Aaron Nelson took the loss, stopping 23 of 26 shots.

Johnstown finished the Showcase, splitting its four games and earning five of the eight possible points.  The Tomahawks make their way to Sault Ste. Marie, MI to take on the Soo Eagles Sep. 27-29.  The Johnstown Tomahawks return home on Oct. 5 and 6 to battle the Springfield Jr. Blues.
