TOMAHAWKS WIN IN 15 GOAL GAME FRIDAY NIGHT

Apr 16, 2021

The Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the New Jersey Titans by a final score of 9-6 on Friday night in Johnstown.

After being unsatisfied with last weekend’s series against Maryland, the Tomahawks came out flying scoring three goals in the first two minutes of the game, with goals coming from William Persson (:44), Caden Lewandowski (1:20), and Daniel Tkac (1:40). Goals began to slow down and penalties started to roll in for both sides. None made any difference in the game until Ethan Webb was called for interference at the 13:54 mark of the period, where Zach Nazzarett scored on the man-advantage to give the Titans their second goal of the game. Jake Suede opened the scoring for New Jersey just a minute earlier, scoring his tenth goal of the season. There was no shortage of shots on goal for either side in the opening frame with Johnstown getting 15 shots to New Jersey’s goaltender Christian Stoever and New Jersey getting 14 to Johnstown’s Josh Graziano. After coming out on fire in the first few minutes, the Titans were only down by one to start the 2nd period.

The deficit wouldn’t last long for the Titans to start the middle frame, with Evan Werner tying the game at 3 just 1:56 into the period on the power play as Jay Ahearn was called for goaltender interference to begin the period. The game began to take a turn shortly after with frustrations seeming to set in for both squads with multiple two, five and ten minute penalties being called across the two teams. The Titans broke through and found their first lead of the game with defenseman David Posma scoring just his second goal of the season. After the Posma goal, more chaos broke out with even more penalties. Amid the penalties, Jay Ahearn got a breakaway opportunity, getting the rebound off his own shot scoring the short-handed goal to tie the game back up at 4. 54 seconds later, Dominic Schimizzi scored his third goal of the season to give the Tomahawks the lead again at 5-4. Shortly after, Schimizzi would be headed to the penalty box and Caleb Price would tie things up again at 5 for the Titans on the power play, scoring his fourth goal of the season to set things up for what was looking to be an exciting 3rd period of play.

The 3rd period began in similar fashion as the previous two, with John Gelatt scoring his 23rd goal of the season 3:16 into the final period. Five minutes later, Will Margel scored his 20th of the season, making it 7-5 in favor of the Tomahawks. Both sides went through another series of penalties until William Persson would score on the final power play opportunity of the game making it eight goals for the Tomahawks on Friday night. The Titans weren’t backing out just yet though, as Tommy Bannister attempted to keep New Jersey in it, netting his third goal of the season to make it 8-6 with just over 4 minutes to go in regulation. That goal would make no difference in the greater scheme of things as Jared Gerger secured the win, scoring with 30 seconds to go, giving the Tomahawks a 9-6 win over the Titans.

The two teams are back again tomorrow night at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA at 7 PM. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com or through the Tomahawks office.
