Weekend Preview: Tomahawks Set for Preseason Tune-Up

The Johnstown Tomahawks are hitting the road for a preseason Western Pennsylvania swing of three hockey games in communities across the Alleghenies. The three games a tune-up before the team begins the 2016-17 regular season at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Friday, the Tomahawks visit the Kirk. S. Nevin Arena in Greensburg, Pa., for a showdown with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 7 p.m. The Knights, a second year NAHL franchise, are looking to improve from their first season. Led by head coach Tom Kowal, the Knights return several key players from last season including Braden Brown, Aiden Beck and Time Gelatt. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton also welcomes Mike Gelatt and Joe Schuler from the New Jersey Titans.

Grant Valentine returns in net for Knights after a solid 2015-16 campaign.

 

Saturday, Johnstown travels to Indiana, Pa., and S&T Bank Arena for a 5 p.m. faceoff with New York Apple Core of the Eastern Hockey League. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Apple Core has produced a number of alumni playing in higher levels of junior hockey, NCAA Division I and Division III, and ACHA college programs, and professional hockey, including:

Mark Eaton – Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL)

Doug Murray – Montreal Canadiens (NHL)

Rob Scuderi – Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL)

 

Sunday, the Tomahawks round out the preseason with an early afternoon contest with Apple Core at North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, Pa. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
